Houndstooth print: what is it, and how to wear it?

This print is made from a mixture of fabric in various colors to make broken squares of abstract shapes with four points.
By tradition, it comes from the Lowlands (Scottish Lowlands) woolen fabric. The most common combination we find is black and white. However, there are many others of different colors, being at first a simple fabric to later become a print.
The name is given to it due to how the particular figure is formed. It is known in Spanish and French as pata de gallo and English as houndstooth.
Origin of the houndstooth print
It originates in the 1930s. Back when the Pinna brand from New York used this pattern in its collection, later being used by Christian Dior.
Since then, designers have used it for their creations and celebrities in their outfits.
As we mentioned, this print’s most common and emblematic combination is black and white.
Still, it has been adapted according to the seasons and occasions with other color combinations other than the original ones.
The houndstooth print and its popularity in fashion
As another fact about its origin, this print originates from Scotland. It was very popular at the end of the 19th century and used only by men, making its way among the British aristocracy. The Duke of Windsor took charge of popularizing it by turning it into the favorite print.
It is at the end of the 50s when it finally reaches women’s outfits. All thanks to the work of designer Christian Dior, who created a new look. And with it, pieces such as full skirts and tight waists, suits, capes, coats, and hats with this pattern. In addition to shoes, and even used it to decorate the box of his first Miss Dior perfume.
This way, other designers joined him in using this fabric for their designs. In 2009, Alexander McQueen launched a tribute collection to Christian Dior and the houndstooth print.
